Now, $600 stimulus checks will begin to be deposited into Americans’ bank accounts on Tuesday night, and physical checks will be mailed Wednesday, according to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. The government has begun distributing $600 stimulus checks to millions of Americans. But actually getting access to that money may be another story.Even as record numbers of Americans spent months unemployed amid the coronavirus pandemic, Congress took months to agree to send out another round of stimulus checks and boost unemployment benefits after the last relief package expired.

With the first stimulus check, private banks and creditors were able to seize a payment to cover an outstanding debt. However, some states, such as California, issued orders forbidding banks and creditors from garnishing your stimulus check. Economic Impact Payment (Stimulus Checks) FAQs - Bank of America ASSISTING OUR CLIENTS Economic Impact Payments frequently asked questions Recently, as part of an emergency coronavirus relief package, the U.S. Federal Government began delivering Economic Impact Payments, also referred to as “stimulus checks” to eligible Americans.

Late last month, the stimulus payments began going out from the IRS. The money is part of the CARES Act legislation, which was created to help the nation with financial struggles during the quarantine period. Stay-at-home orders have led to many people losing income, so the government issued $1,200 checks to taxpayers as a way of helping boost the economy. Additionally, married couples are receiving $2,400 payments, and parents are getting $500 for their children. If you are entitled to a check but aren't sure how, or where, to cash it, scroll down for some options.

Walmart

One of the easiest ways to cash a stimulus check without a bank is by doing it through Walmart. The store does charge a fee, ranging from $4 to $8, depending on the amount of the check. Walmart is not the only big chain that offers this option though, as places like Kroger and other grocery or big box stores do as well.

Supermarkets

Select supermarket and grocery store chains can cash large balances, including your stimulus check or tax refunds. With a cashing fee between $0 to $6, your best option is a Kroger KR family of supermarkets with a Money Services desk, across the U.S. These Kroger company brands will also cash your stimulus check for free:

  • Kroger
  • Fry’s
  • King Sooper’s
  • Smith’s
  • City Market
  • QFC
  • Ralph’s
  • Gerbes
  • Bakers
  • Dillons
  • Pay Less
  • Fred Meyer
  • Pick ‘N Save
  • Metro Market

You can also cash check balances up to $5,000 at the aforementioned stores, just be sure you are calling ahead if your stimulus check is larger than this amount. Additionally, as reported by Forbes, other stores might charge a check cashing fee as high as $6, while others may only cash checks less than $500.

Check Cashing Business

Another option for cashing your stimulus check is to use a check cashing business. There are many around and most likely there will be a few to choose from right in your own town. Notably, the fee at a place like this tends to be a little higher that it would be at somewhere like Walmart, which may be something to take into consideration.

PayPal

For anyone who prefers not to walk around with $1,200 in cash in their pocket, PayPal may be an option for cashing your stimulus check. The app-based financial company has a service called PayPal 'Cash Plus,' which allows users to take a photo of their check and have the money credited to their account.

With this option, there is a fee if you want the money made available to you right way. However, there is no fee if you are able to wait a 10 period of time for the money to be credited.

A Local Bank

Even if you don't have a bank account, it may still be possible to cash your stimulus check at one. Government checks are deemed 'safe' by most all banks, and therefore some of them may be willing to cash the stimulus checks for non-customers. However, again, there will likely be nominal fee.

Open a Checking Account

If you do not have a bank account, using your stimulus check to open one could be an option as well. With the possibility of a second stimulus package bill being regularly discussed, now might be a good time to set up a check account for any future payouts that could be sent. This way, you could potentially have your next payment sent via direct deposit.

Put it Into Savings

Similar to opening a checking out, creating a savings account might also be a helpful. For citizens who have kept working due to be an essential employee, or were otherwise able to maintain income, the $1,200 could be an opportunity to set money aside for an future situation that could arise. While this certainly is not an option for everyone, if could be a possibility for some.

Everything you need to know about the new $900 billion COVID-19 relief package

Qualifying Americans began to see a $600 stimulus check deposit in their bank accounts last week. But some haven't gotten theirs yet.

The window for qualifying Americans to start receiving payment opened Dec. 29, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. These funds will continue to come in via direct deposit or mail. Paper checks started to be mailed out Dec. 30.

However, as the IRS continues to process the $600 stimulus checks, some Americans have reported issues regarding their stimulus checks, including funds being deposited into the wrong bank account or not being deposited at all.

“Treasury and the IRS are working with unprecedented speed to issue a second round of Economic Impact Payments to eligible Americans and their families,” U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin said. “These payments are an integral part of our commitment to providing vital additional economic relief to the American people during this unprecedented time.”

A push for an increased payment of $2,000 made it through the House, but its future the Senate is unclear after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's unanimous consent request on the afternoon of Dec. 29. Therefore, the payment amount will remain at $600 as laid out in the COVID-19 relief bill President Donald Trump signed into law Sunday, or until further legislation is passed.

Major U.S. banks like Chase, Wells Fargo and Bank of America recommend their customers to set up direct deposit alerts on their accounts to be notified when payment goes through.

Banks said to keep an eye out for payment with a description that will include the word 'IRS.' Wells Fargo said the description will be 'IRS TREAS 310 XXTAXEIP2,' or something similar.

Payments will be distributed automatically, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. There is no action required for those eligible.

Banks do not have the ability to determine whether you qualify for a stimulus check or not. They also do not have access to information about tracking your payment.

The IRS does not allow people to change direct deposit information that's already on file. If a direct deposit is made with invalid bank information or the account was closed, the bank will reject the deposit and the IRS will mail payment as soon as possible. These changes will be reflected on the Get My Payment portal.

For those without direct deposit information on file, payment will arrive in the form of a check or debit card in the mail, according to the IRS.

Why Is My Stimulus Check Pending

If you haven't gotten your direct deposit yet, keep an eye out for incoming mail. It could be delivered as a paper check or a debit card.

The Treasury Department's Bureau of Fiscal Service will be sending a limited number of payments by debit card to 'speed delivery of the payments to reach as many people as soon as possible.'

The IRS said the second form of stimulus check payment might be different than the first. For example, it's possible for those who received a check in the mail to get a debit card this time, and vice versa.

The debit card will be sent in a white envelope that displays the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal. It will be a Visa card with the issuing bank listed as MetaBank.
